The Welfare Footprint Framework, its estimates and its tools are built to be used independently. This page brings together what you need to learn the framework, apply it in your own work, use our estimates and teach it to others.
WFI receives more requests for research projects and analyses than we can take on. These resources let you do the work yourself.
Learn the framework
- What is a Welfare Footprint?: an introduction to the idea
- The Welfare Footprint Framework: the analytical modules, key sources and short videos
- Technical Definitions: operational definitions for the terminology used in the framework, including the pain intensity categories
- FAQ: answers to common questions, with a search
- Publications: our papers and reports
Apply it yourself
- AI-Assisted Analysis: tools that follow the same step-by-step approach used in Welfare Footprint analyses, from Circumstances to Biological Consequences, Affective Experiences and welfare impacts. They support learning, exploration and first-pass analyses; they do not produce validated Welfare Footprint estimates. Start with Which tool should I use?
- Value of information: compares two scenarios when the inputs are uncertain and shows which information to pin down first. A prototype for testing.
- Estimates Dossier: search and filter our catalogue of affective experience estimates
- Public Mirror of the WFI Scientific Canon (GitHub): available as an open reference
Before you publish or rely on results, read Using the framework responsibly: state the scope of the assessment, report results separately by intensity category with assumptions and uncertainty, and cite the sources, versions and dates of the estimates you use.
Teach it
You can incorporate the Welfare Footprint Framework into university lectures, courses, textbooks and practical exercises, or supervise students applying it in their theses. See Teach the framework.

Training and certification
Certification is planned for 2027. Details are on the certification page.
Certification is planned for 2027. WFI may then refer suitable requests for research projects and analyses to people certified in the framework. Certification will recognise an individual’s competence in applying the framework; it does not mean that WFI endorses the analyses they produce.
Have you used the Welfare Footprint Framework or WFI's estimates? Give us your testimony.
