Our team

The Welfare Footprint Institute is organised around a Board of Directors and four departments. Together they develop the Welfare Footprint Framework, apply it to the questions that matter most for animals, and help others use it well.

Board of directors

The Welfare Footprint Institute’s board of directors provides strategic guidance, drawing on decades of collective experience. The board unites experts in animal welfare, evolutionary biology, global health, data analysis, philosophy and program management to advance the institute’s mission of quantifying animal welfare impacts to inform decision-making through rigorous research and analysis.

Departments

Research department

The Research Department helps refine the analytical methods and applies the Welfare Footprint Framework. It reviews the evidence and produces welfare impact analysis and Welfare Footprints.

Research groups

Research is organised in Research Groups, each headed by a Senior Researcher. Each group also brings in other researchers and collaborators according to the project.

Poultry welfare

Mammal welfare

Aquatic animal welfare

Innovation department

The Innovation Department develops the methods and builds the digital and AI infrastructure that lets the Welfare Footprint Framework be applied efficiently, consistently and at scale.

Dissemination and engagement

The Dissemination and Engagement Department makes Welfare Footprint evidence useful to those who can act on it, builds partnerships, research collaborations, sector-specific use cases, teaching and self-help resources. It also runs the Research Network, which connects researchers who apply, review and extend the framework.
