Dr Kate Hartcher is an animal welfare scientist dedicated to improving the lived experience of animals in global food systems. Kate has a PhD in applied animal behaviour and welfare from the University of Sydney, and has extensive experience spanning scientific research, policy development, education, and large-scale implementation to advance farm animal welfare. Kate is a Senior Researcher with the Welfare Footprint Institute and also an Adjunct Researcher at the University of Queensland where she consults on livestock behaviour and welfare. Previously, she worked as Scientific Director at Global Food Partners, leading technical strategy and animal welfare implementation across Asia including establishing animal welfare training centres and training courses with universities across the region. Prior to this, she worked in Science and Policy with RSPCA Australia, contributing to standards development and on-farm welfare assessments. She has advised governments and multinational companies, led global research collaborations with leading universities, presented at dozens of animal welfare events across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia, and published nearly 30 scientific papers in the field of farm animal welfare, including some of the most read and cited papers in the history of the World’s Poultry Science Journal.
