Chiawen is a Research Associate at the Welfare Footprint Institute, working on the welfare impacts of pre-slaughter operations on salmon welfare. She also serves as Fish Behavior and Welfare Researcher at New York University’s WATR-lab and sits on the advisory board of Scale Welfare. She holds an M.A. in Animal Studies from New York University and a B.S. in Life Science from Ateneo de Manila University. She has supported organizations including The Humane League, Animal Equality, and Fish Welfare Initiative through research contributions and project leadership work aimed at improving fish welfare in aquaculture. Her current research examines species-level welfare impacts in aquaculture and explores fish behavioral complexity in both captive and wild environments.
