Abstract
In Chapter 1 [ 1] we present an analytical framework to quantify the loss of welfare experienced by animals in an explicit and comparative manner, based on estimates of the intensity and duration of the ‘pain’ (used as an operational term for affective states of negative valence) endured as a result of different welfare challenges (of both physical and psychological nature) experienced over their lives.
