Abstract
In a series of studies collated in this book we assessed the impact of the adoption of the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) and the use of slower-growing breeds on the welfare of broiler chickens. To this end, we used an analytical approach (the Cumulative Pain Framework ) that translates evidence on the duration and intensity of the pain associated with these challenges into time spent in four categories of pain intensity (Annoying, Hurtful, Disabling, Excruciating). Each intensity category is defined by specific criteria relating to the disruptive character of the pain experience: from a minimally disrupting (Annoying) to a tormenting state (Excruciating).
